Forty-one suspected members of Hizb ut-Tahrir were arrested in the city following a clash with police in front of the Press Club on Saturday.

Two people were also injured, one of them with rubber bullet, during the clash.

Police said the clash took place at noon as they obstructed a procession suddenly brought out by the members of the banned outfit near the Press Club area.

A chase and counter-chase took place when the law enforcers fired rubber bullets and teargas shells and charged baton to disperse them, leaving a man, Jahirul, injured by bullet.

A cocktail was also exploded during the clash, leaving another man, Nazimuddin Babla, injured.

Police detained seven people from the spot and later the two injured, Jahirul and Babla, from Dhaka Medical College Hospital while they were undergoing treatment there.

Following the clash, Rab members held 32 others from Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) Bhaban and nearby areas.

Jahirul and Babla, however, termed themselves as pedestrians, saying that they were injured while passing by the area.

“Police held us suspecting our link to the outfit”, they said.
