Maternity allowance for poor mothers has been raised to Taka 350 from Taka 300 in the proposed national budget of 2013-2014 fiscal year.

"Considering miseries of pregnant women in rural areas, the government has fixed up Taka 350 as monthly allowance for a poor
pregnant woman," Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith said in his budget speech on Thursday.

The government, he said, has taken up programs to reduce poverty and meeting nutrition demand of the expectant mothers and their babies.

At present, some 1,01,200 poor pregnant women all over the country are getting Taka 350 and the finance minister proposed to raise the number of beneficiaries by 15 percent in the budget.

Muhith said a monthly allowance of Taka 350 is being provided to 77,625 working lactating mothers of 61 district headquarters including Dhaka, Narayanganj and Gazipur garments areas.

He said a recent World Bank publication titled 'Bangladesh Development Update' also mentioned that poverty in Bangladesh is
    reducing at a faster rate.

"In the coming fiscal year, I propose to raise the rate of allowance by Taka 50 and the number of beneficiaries by 10 percent," Finance Minister said.

Muhith said, "It is a great challenge for any emerging economy to bring the backward section of population within the fold of the mainstream economic activities."

"We have significantly expanded the scope and coverage of social safety net programs to bring down poverty. Efforts are continuing to ensure regional parity. We have taken steps to ensure optimum utilization of public money by avoiding overlaps in safety net programs," he said.

The Awami League-led 14-party grand alliance has allocated Taka 48.88 crore as maternity allowance in the 2013-2014 FY which was Taka 42.50 crore in the last fiscal year.
