BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday said democracy and public life are not safe in the hands of the Awami League-led government. “Innocent orphan boys were shot dead during a crackdown on a peaceful rally of Hefajat in the dark of night keeping the media away from the scene at the behest of this government. So, democracy and the lives of people aren’t safe in its hands,” he said. Fakhrul came up with the allegation while addressing a mass campaign programme on Auliapur Union Parishad premises in Sadar upazila at noon. The BNP spokesman said Prime Minister’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy in an article claimed that around 35 percent members of the Bangladesh Army are militants. “It’s a deep rooted conspiracy.” Mentioning that Joy on various occasions tried to brand Bangladesh as a militant country, Fakhrul called upon people to come forward to resist such conspiracy against the country. Turning to opposition’s demand for arranging the next polls under a non-party administration, he said the demand for restoration of the caretaker government system has turned into a mass demand. “The country’s 90 percent people now want the next general election under a non-party caretaker government.” Fakhrul warned that if the government does not concede to the mass demand, they will force it to arrange the polls under a caretaker government through a stormy movement. He also asked the party leaders and activists to get ready to take to the streets.
