The glittering original FIFA World Cup Trophy, which is for the first time touring Bangladesh, opened for spectators at Hotel Radisson in the city on Wednesday morning amid huge enthusiasm among the sports lovers. DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed and BFF President Kazi Mohammad Salahuddin unveiled the 36.5 centimeter gold trophy — 13 centimeters in diameter and 6.175 kg in weight — at the ball room of the hotel at a simple ceremony with entire satisfaction of soccer crazy fans. BOA Secretary General Syed Shahed Reza, President of Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Manjur Quader and officials of FIFA, BFF and Coco Cola were present on the occasion. A large number of soccer fans from all walks of life gathered in front of the Hotel Radisson in the morning and were awaiting in a long queue to watch the trophy and as well as for posing photographs with the trophy braving the blockade enforced by the opposition. The trophy will remain open for the spectators till Thursday afternoon at the same venue. The trophy was originally scheduled to be displayed at the Bangabandhu National Stadium. However, the venue was shifted for security reasons in the dying moments. Some 15,000 invitee ticket holders had an opportunity to watch and take photos with the trophy in the two-day programmes at Hotel Radisson. This is for the first time that the authentic, solid gold original FIFA World Cup Trophy was brought to Bangladesh. A replica of FIFA World Cup had toured Bangladesh in 2002, but this is the first time the solid gold original trophy is traveling to Bangladesh as part of its world tour covering 149,576.78 kms which is more than three times the Earth’s circumference. Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga, who said he is not a diehard football fan himself but does watch the World Cup final to see his trophy raised, designed the current trophy in 1971. At the time, the trophy cost about US$ 50,000, now valued over US$ 10 million.
