The Election Commission is going to start distribution of 70 lakh national identity (NID) cards among the fresh voters this month. The distribution of NID cards will kick off in the capital this month and elsewhere in the country in October, election commissioner Md Shah Nawaz told reporters in his office of the EC secretariat on Wednesday. The undistributed NID cards of the old voters will also be distributed. “The NID cards have already been prepared. The distribution will kick off in the current month. But the distribution of NID cards in remote areas will start in October,” he added. The distribution task will complete by the end of October. Enumerators will distribute the cards going door to door in the capital. However, the commission has not yet decided whether enumerators will provide the NID cards from specific places or going door to door in remote areas, he added. Over amendment to the National Identity Registration Act 2010, the commissioner said the law is going to be changed to keep a provision that each citizen will have the right to get the NID card. On Monday, the National Identity Registration (Amendment) Bill 2013 was placed in Parliament and sent to the relevant parliamentary standing committee to report back in the House within seven days. The bill states that each citizen of the country will attain the right to have a national identity card and the Election Commission will provide it. “If the bill is passed, the citizens less than 18 years will be provided with NID cards, but not registered as voters,” he continued. Shah Nawaz said the commission will take next steps for providing NID cards to those below 18 years after the bill is passed. Over 70 lakh fresh voters were included during the last countrywide voter list updating throughout 2012. After the inclusion of the fresh voters, the number of voters now has risen to 9,21,98,029, according to an EC secretariat source.
