BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Tuesday night told the visiting German Parliamentary team that there is no alternative to holding a fresh election immediately to restore democracy and resolving the ongoing political crisis in Bangladesh. “The BNP chairperson told the German Parliamentary delegation that there’s no alternative to arranging a fresh national election soon under a non-party administration to resolve the ongoing political crisis and bring democracy back on track,” said BNP vice chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury after the meeting. The nearly one and a half hours meeting that began around 7pm was held at the BNP chief’s Gulshan political office. Briefing reporters about the meeting, Mobin said the meeting between Khaleda and the German Parliamentary Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development was held in a very friendly atmosphere. The German team told the BNP chairperson that their country and the European Union are closely monitoring the political developments in Bangladesh, Mobin said. They also underscored the need for holding a fresh inclusive election through talks in the interest of democracy. The BNP leader said the delegation also discussed at the meeting various issues relating to the mutual interests of the two countries, January 5 election and the aftermath of the Rana Plaza tragedy. Khaleda told the German team that the January 5 election was a farce and the current parliament was not formed with public representatives. “Most of the MPs were not elected with people’s votes. The Speaker and even the opposition leader were also elected without people’s votes,” Mobin quoted Khaleda as telling the German delegation. The former prime minister also voiced deep concern over the sharp rise in the incidents of killing, abduction and forced disappearance in the country. The BNP chief also told the delegation that she has started a movement for the restoration of democracy and it will continue in the days to come. Dagmar Woehrl led the German team to the meeting. BNP chairperson’s adviser Reaz Rahman and Sabihuddin Ahmed were also present.
