A court here on Wednesday, amid a row, ordered the officer-in-charge of Nabinagar Police Station to file a case after looking into the complaint made against 11 RAB personnel for killing Shahnur Alam, a local Awami League leader. Judicial magistrate Nazmun Nahar passed the order after a 30-minute hearing of the lawyers from both sides. Maj AZM Shakib Siddiqui, Bhiarab camp commander of RAB-14, is among the 11 accused named in the complaint. During the hearing, the counsel for complainant Mehedi Hasan, victim’s brother, alleged that the RAB personnel had killed captured Shahnur in a planned way as there were numerous marks of injuries on his body. They also prayed for bringing the accused RAB personnel to justice in the interest of establishing the rule of law. The engaged lawyers for the RAB opposed the allegation with heated arguments, creating bedlam in the courtroom for a while. However, the court at last intervened and urged all to remain calm. Earlier, in the morning, a group of RAB men in civil dress took position in the court area and forced the journalists to leave the courtroom. On April 29, the members of RAB-14 allegedly picked up businessman Shahnur, 43, also a leader of Nabinagar upazila Awami League, from his home at Bogdohor village. On June 1, Mehedi Hasan, Shahnur’s brother, lodged the complaint against the RAB members. According to the complaint, Mehedi Hasan alleged that the RAB members had inhumanly tortured his captured brother at their Bhairab camp in Kishoreganj, leaving him seriously injured. Later, Brahmanbaria prison authorities referred injured Shahnur to Sadar hospital on May 4 as his condition deteriorated. Following further deterioration of his health, Shahnur was shifted to Comilla Medical College Hospital where he died on May 6. Besides the 11 RAB men, two civilians have also been made accused in the case. Advocates Khairul Anam and Golam Sarwar Khokan appeared for the complainant.
