BNP acting secretary general Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday said the country’s existence will be at stake if the current ‘illegal, unethical and subservient government’ stays in office for a longer period. “This is a subservient government which has now become like a slave. It can’t protest when Bangladeshi people are killed along the border. It even couldn’t raise its strong voice when a BGB member was killed by Myanmar Border Guard Police,” he said. Fakhrul further said, “If we allow this illegal, unethical and subservient government to remain in office for a longer time, the country’s existence will be obliterated.” He came up with the remarks while addressing a rally at Chagalnaiya College Road. Calling the current parliament a house of clowns, Fakhrul said 154 of its members were elected unopposed while 146 others elected only with 5 percent votes. He alleged that the government keeps on holding office using the state machinery and is resorting to killings, forced disappearance and other repressive acts. Criticising the government for what he said unabated killings and forced disappearances, Fakhrul said the government has turned the entire country into a death valley. He also renewed his party’s demand for disbanding Rab, saying the members of the elite force are claiming lives instead of ensuring people’s security. He urged his party leaders and activists to get united forgetting conflicts and differences of opinion to save the country, restore democracy and establish people’s voting rights through a strong movement. Prior to the rally, he distributed Iftar items among the poor on behalf of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia. Earlier, the BNP spokesman also addressed a rally and distributed relief materials and Iftar items among the destitute and flood-hit people in Porsuram upazila. BNP joint secretaries general Barkatullah Bulu and Shahjahan, students’ affairs secretary Shaheed Uddin Chowdhury Anee and Feni district BNP joint general secretary and former MP Rehana Akhter Ranu also addressed the rally. Fakhrul reached Feni around 1pm to distribute relief materials and Iftar items among the destitute and flood-hit people of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s own constituency (Fulgazi, Chhagalnaiya and Parsuram) on behalf of her. The BNP acting secretary also addressed a rally at Munhsirhat Bazar in the upazila. Addressing the rally, Fakhrul alleged that the ruling party men brutally killed Fulgazi upazila chairman Ekramul Haque over their intra-party conflicts. He alleged that the government falsely implicated BNP leaders and activists to protect the real murderers. The BNP leader demanded the government immediately release the BNP leaders and activists implicated in the murder case, including Minar and withdraw the false case filed against them. He also demanded the government crack down on the perpetrators and ensure their punishment. He alleged that many ‘false’ cases have been filed against BNP leaders and activists, including its chairperson Khaleda Zia and vice chairman Tarique Rahman to keep them away from politics. Fakhrul also alleged that the government killed several thousand BNP leaders and activists in the last five years so that they cannot wage a movement. The BNP leader lamented that Awami League which had started its journey 65 years back to protect democracy had repeatedly annihilated democracy. He also said the ruling party not only annihilated democracy, but also established a one-party rule – Baksal – under a different cover through holding a ‘farcical and voterless’ election on January 5.
